European Higher Education for the World 2 - Studies on international students' mobility and brain gain

Title of the project

European Higher Education for the World 2 - Studies on international students' mobility and brain gain

Duration:33 months

Project Description:

The project will support and give a picture of the notion that the EM Programme contributes to the provision of skilled specialists so needed in disfavoured regions outside the EU - through Mundus alumni - contributors to technology and knowledge transfer to developing countries. Planned outcomes will improve the image of European initiatives targeted to attracting students from all over the world, which are at times associated in social perception with brain drain and human capital loss for developing countries. Research within our first Action 4 project (European Higher Education for the World - Studies and Promotion) brought implications for farther studies and analysis on the impact of the Mundus Programme. The same consortium will conduct studies to investigate the European Higher Education position in global education market, focused on its influence on brain drain/gain phenomena with emphasis on Mundus impact. Project activities will be carried out in two stages: I. Studies on international students' mobility - brain drain and brain gain in global perspective
   A. Global trends in brain drain and gain (analysis of the literature and global statistical data),
   B. EM sustainability and contribution for third countries' development (survey and'' interviews - international experts)
   C. Mundus students' plans and visions of future after completing EMMCs (survey, interviews and essays - EM students).
II. Studies on reversed brain gain for Third Countries in individual perspective Brain gain case studies - phenomenological investigation of Mundus return success stories (portrayals of EMMC's alumni - professionals who transferred knowledge and skills to their developing countries). Outputs: 2 publications, DVD film, brochure, website - targeted to non-EU students, HEIs, recruitment agencies, exploring (and promoting when distributed) both Mundus and the EHE impact in terms of brain gain.
